A serjeant-at-arms, or sergeant-at-arms is an officer appointed by a deliberative body to keep order during its meetings. The word "serjeant" is derived from the Latin serviens, which means "servant". Historically, serjeants-at-arms were armed men retained by English lords and monarchs; The ceremonial maces with which they are associated were in origin a weapon.

The Sergeant at Arms sees to it that everything goes as it must. He or she takes care of logistics, puting things in place and seeing that everything and everybody is in the right place at the right time.

---

[Chief Judge verifies that renaming is correct.]

You will be briefed by the Chief Judge before the meeting.

You will be placed in a breakout room during the evaluation contest with the contestants. You need to have the ability to time 5 minutes.

The Zoom Master will be bringing all of the contestants into the room. I recommend you spend the five seconds to confirm that everyone is in the room.  If you are missing someone, tell the zoom master via chat asap.

Tell contestants they will have 5 minutes to prep.

Tell the contestants they are not allowed to utilize electronic devices other than the computer for the zoom conference.  So, no looking up quotes. No surfing the web. No typing. They need to scribble on paper as if they were physically at the contest. Tell them that everyone’s microphone should be set to UNmute so that the SaA can ensure no one is typing.

Explain that at the end of the five minutes, everyone except contestant 1 will be folding their paper in half and holding it up by their faces.

Explain that even when the fives minutes are up, Contestant one must remain in the room until Zoom Master indicates to SaA that he/she may rejoin the main room.  This is to ensure that they don’t overhear the interview of the model speaker.

Explain that Contestant 2 -6 will be entertained in the room by the SaA.

Explain that one by one the Zoom Master will be signaling to the SaA that the next contestant needs to enter the main room.  The SaA will vocally announce that the next contestant is up, may look at their notes and rejoin the main room.

This will be done during the one minute of silence. Ask if contestants have any questions. Questions?

The SaA will then Announce that time is starting.

Time for five minutes.

Announce time has ended.

Tells contestant 1 to remain in the room until SaA tells him/her to leave.

The SaA signals Zoom Master that five minutes are up.

The SaA tells contestants to fold their paper in half and hold by face.

Zoom Master says main room is ready to receive first contestant.

The SaA tells Contestant to leave room.

Contestant leaves break out room.

The SaA for the rest of the contestants, remind them that they need to hold the paper folding in half by their face. Keep their mics on UNmute.

Lead them in a discussion. The SaA should be viewing everyone to see that they are looking at the camera and engaged and not drifting off and mentally doing more preparation for their evaluation.  Call on anyone who is not engaged. If needed re-explain the rule of not giving later contestants more time to prepare than contestant 1.

The Zoom Master sends a message to the room that one minute of silence is in effect after contestant 1.  SaA tells Contestant 2 that he/she may open their paperwork and leave the room.

In the room, the SaA is still entertaining the other contestants.

This process goes on until the last contestant leaves the SaA’s room. Once the last contestant leaves the room, the SaA can leave as well.

Q&A with the Chief judge as needed.
